Welcome to Clean Slate Ranch: Home of tight jeans, cowboy boots, and rough trails. For some men, it's a fantasy come true.
"[A] passionate, trope-heavy romance...scintillating romantic tension and steamy sex scenes." —Publishers Weekly on Hard Ride
Mack Garrett loves the rolling hills surrounding his Northern California dude ranch. Leading vacationers on horse trails with his two best friends is enough—romance is definitely not in the cards. When a sexy tourist shows up at Clean Slate, he's as far from Mack's type as can be. So why is the handsome city slicker so far under his skin in less than a day?
Roughing it in the middle of nowhere isn't anywhere near Wes Bentley's idea of fun. Then he lays eyes on the gruffest, hottest papa bear he's ever seen. But Mack is as hard to pin down as he looks—distant, sharp-tongued, and in desperate need of a shave. Until a campout gone wrong strands both men in the mountains with nothing to do but get to know each other.
Mack intends to keep his closely guarded heart out of Wes's very talented hands. But for a seven-day cowboy, Wes is packing some long-term possibility. The cold country air can do wonders for bringing bodies together—but it will take more than that to bridge the distance between two men whose lives are worlds apart.

Greg Boudreaux narrates as Mack Garrett and Wes Bentley meet on Mack's dude ranch. Imagine scruffy, grumpy Mack as the guy in one of the old Marlboro cigarette ads. On the other hand, talented Wes, a dinner theater actor, could be the poster boy for the LGBT community. Boudreaux uses huskier tones for the bigger and rougher cowboy and gives Wes a lighter voice and wicked sense of humor. (Think Freddie Mercury of Queen.) As romance ignites, the intimate love scenes burn but are very classy. As lust ramps up to love, their voices and their dialogue become softer and more tender. Arthur (Uniquely Us) kicks off her Clean Slate Ranch series with a frustratingly meandering contemporary. Gruff, taciturn Mack Garrett left Los Angeles and his career as a SWAT officer for a calmer life on a dude ranch in northern California. After a miserable ending to his last relationship, he thinks he’s content with one-night stands. He sees that notion for the fiction it is when Wes Bentley arrives for a vacation with his sister and several friends. Wes was run out of Los Angeles by a nightmare ex who ended his dreams of being an actor. These two damaged yet appealing souls might be able to heal each other if they’re willing to take the risk of further heartbreak—and if Arthur gives them a chance. The plot moves ever so slowly, hinting at mysteries that are not fully developed and leaving readers to wonder why the author headed down several dead-end alleys. The focus oscillates between the deepening love between two hot men and the suspense of dastardly deeds committed by unnamed people. Either plot would be fine, but combining the two in this plodding fashion makes for a drawn-out, unbearably slow story. The epilogue, though satisfying, also is far more verbose than is necessary. “The whole thing seemed convoluted and strange, like something out of a romantic suspense movie plot,” Arthur writes near the end, aptly summarizing her work’s flaws.
