In the blockbuster and bestselling tradition of Jurassic Park comes the breakneck new adventure from the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling author Matthew Reilly whose imaginative, cinematic thrillers "make you feel like a kid again; [they're] a blast" (Booklist). It is a secret the Chinese government has been keeping for forty years. They have proven the existence of dragons-a landmark discovery no one could ever believe is real, and a scientific revelation that will amaze the world. Now the Chinese are ready to unveil their astonishing findings within the greatest zoo ever constructed. A small group of VIPs and journalists has been brought to the zoo deep within China to see these fabulous creatures for the first time. Among them is Dr. Cassandra Jane "CJ" Cameron, a writer for National Geographic and an expert on reptiles. The visitors are assured by their Chinese hosts that they will be struck with wonder at these beasts, that the dragons are perfectly safe, and that nothing can go wrong. Of course it can't.

Reilly's newest thriller pits a resourceful American reptile specialist against the might of China and a race of vicious dragons--yes, dragons. Rich Orlow is an excellent narrator, and Reilly provides him nonstop action with a cinematic flair. Although very violent, the story is neither sadistic nor ghoulish. Orlow's confident tenor is clear and well paced. He effects the many character voices without annoying caricature, which might have been a real temptation for a cast that includes evil Chinese party officials, mad scientists, and super-competent American agents. Although the salt-water crocodiles that figure in the plot connect Reilly with his native Australia, his heart is squarely in L.A. F.C. © AudioFile 2016, Portland, Maine

Reilly (Ice Station) gives the reader a wonderful action thriller with a Jurassic Park-like twist when crocodile expert and writer for National Geographic Dr. CJ Cameron is invited by the Chinese government to visit a zoo bigger than Disney that features dragons. The Chinese, after 40 years, are finally ready to announce to the world they discovered and have built an enormous zoo habitat where dragons can be seen in their natural environment. Of course, things go bad and the dragons run amuck with only Dr. Cameron and a few people standing against the dragons and the Chinese who will kill not to be embarrassed. This gripping tale mixes a wonderful story with Rich Orlow's fantastic narration. VERDICT Highly recommended for all audio collections. ["Despite the lack of originality of Reilly's plot, his fans may still enjoy it, as will readers who love sf/fantasy tales, especially those involving dragons": LJ Xpress Reviews 2/6/15 review of the Gallery hc.]--Scott R.
